Some of the early Dell Laptops did in fact explode on the table while idling and thank goodness nobody got hurt. Due to this fact all Lithium Ion Battery manufacturer have implemented a safety circuitry that prevents the computer from overcharging the Battery Pack and monitors contantly the state and condition of the pack. There are also many temperature sensors built into the Battery Pack to shut off the charge current when a certain temperature is reached. Most importantly is that the end of life is actually not determined by the computer or any other Software that monitors the condition of the battery.Dell INSPIRON 2600 Battery, Dell INSPIRON 2650 Battery Dell Inspiron 6400 Battery, Dell Inspiron E1505 Battery All of these Software application only query the battery itself. The Batery Pack has sophisticated electronics that provides the data that is requested by an software application. I do not    Compaq Presario CQ60 battery   Compaq Presario CQ61 battery  know exactly how the Battery communication Protocol is built and what it consists of, however logically all charge cycles among other dynamic data and static data is stored at Battery pack level. My guess would be some USB / or 2 wire protocol is used to communicate with the batteries Micro circuit. The battery Packs are configured in two's i.e. one cell is made up of two single cells connected in parallel to increase the amount of stored energy per cell. In many cases a battery pack is made up of 8 cells where two cells of them are configured in parallel and those in series. Four of these battery cells will nominally produce a Voltage of 4*3 Volt = 12 Volt. In reality the individual cell packs are higher at around 3.7V * 4 = 14.8V or higher. The controller circuit measures each pack i.e. 3.7 V for the first two cells, 7.4 V for the second two cells, 11.1 V for the third two cells and 14.8V for the last two cell pack. In this way the Micro can determine if any of the two cells are defective and act accordingly, mostly does not allow any charging anymore if found to be defective. The reason for that is if a two cell pack is short and the charger is going to force electrical current into the cell, chances are that this thing is going to blow into your face due to electro chemical reaction. The Micro would have to be smart enough to also figure out if the cell can hold the charge. Therefore they test the voltage after it peaked and then again a few minutes later to see how far the voltage dropped. If the value is within a predetermined number the HP Pavilion DV6 battery   Compaq Presario CQ40 batterybattery will allow normal usage. If not, for safety reasons it will say buddy thats it! These multi cell Battery packs require a tremendous high quality standard. It is common that in this configuration, if the cells are not precisely matched, to have premature fasilure. Most manufacturer do some matching, however find it too expensive to do precise matching since it takes quite some time. Time is Money!!!!!! (At a Dell Price tag of $150.00 or more one could expect a little more!)
One can of course theorize that some smart marketing dude would take this fact to the companies advantage, however I believe that it is primarily a Safety issue and the fact that the legal proceeds are far more costly to the manufacturer, Dell INSPIRON 2650 Battery, if something blows up so they make the battery intelligent.
If for example one of the eight cells has developed a defect and this can happen very quickly if a cell gets overheated several times (Lithium Ion is very sensitive to heat), the total battery pack voltage drops by a few hundred millivolt in a favorable case. In this case the battery indicator will flash in a weird way, but the manufacturer usually fails to document this visual feedback and leaves us in the dark. The only thing we can do, is guess. This is why your computer will still work even if there is a cell or two defective however will not hold a charge for very long since internally the good cells try to level out the defective once. Again, for safety reasons the Micro Controller on the Battery end might decide that it is not safe to allow a charge and the pack is declared to be dead.
The only way to bypass this condition, is to manipulate the data that the Battery has collected over time. I can imagine that it is possible to access permanent memory storage devices inside the battery and change certain data cells. This sounds easy, but requires the knowledge of the Hardware and Firmware used in the Batteries Control circuit.
